Training

The GVA Community Training Department offers a variety of CPR, first aid and EMS-related classes that are open to the public. The following list of courses represents just some of those available. They are American Heart Association courses, unless otherwise specified. Some are offerred frequently (for example, CPR for Healthcare Providers and its refresher are held every second Wednesday evening), whereas others are offered only when there is enough interest.   • BLS for Healthcare Providers The BLS for Healthcare Providers Course covers core material such as adult and pediatric CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag mask), foreign-body airway obstruction, and automated external defibrillation. This course is for healthcare providers such as EMS personnel, physician assistants, doctors, dentists, nurses, and respiratory therapists who must have a credential (card) documenting successful completion of a CPR course.

  • BLS for Healthcare Providers Refresher This refresher course covers the same material as the BLS for Healthcare Providers Course, but in an abbreviated format for those who have previously taken the full course.

  • Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Teaches students how to protect themselves from bloodborne pathogens in the workplace. What to do when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace. The right steps to take to clean themselves and the area involved when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace. How to report any exposure to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace.

  • Heartsaver CPR in Schools For middle- and high school students seeking a credential in CPR and AED. The Heartsaver CPR in Schools Course, tailored to middle- and high school students, teaches CPR and AED use, relief of choking in adults and children, and infant CPR and relief of choking.

  • Heartsaver CPR/AED The Heartsaver AED Course teaches CPR, AED use, relief of choking in adults and children, and infant CPR and relief of choking, and use of barrier devices for all ages. For those who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements.

  • Heartsaver First Aid For those who have a duty to respond to a first aid or cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements. The Heartsaver First Aid Course teaches how to manage illness and injuries in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. Course content includes General Principles, Medical Emergencies, and Injury Emergencies. Optional topics include CPR and AED, and Environmental Emergencies.

  • Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid For those involved in child care who have a duty to respond to a first aid emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements, such as child care workers, teachers, foster care workers, camp counselors,youth organizations, and coaches for children's sports organizations. The Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid Course teaches how to manage illness and injuries in a child in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. Topics include First Aid Basics, Medical Emergencies, Injury Emergencies, Environmental Emergencies, Optional First Aid Topics, and CPR and AED.

  • Family & Friends CPR Family members, friends and members of the general community who want to learn CPR but do not need a course completion card. This program also can be a non-credentialed option for middle- and high-school students. The Family & Friends CPR program teaches how to perform CPR in adults, children, or infants and how to help an adult, child, or infant who is choking.

  • Family & Friends First Aid for Children For those caring for infants and children, such as family members, babysitters, and others providing in-home care, who want basic first aid information but who do not need a course completion credential. The new Family &Friends First Aid for Children program teaches how to manage illness and injuries in a child for the first few minutes until professional help arrives. This program covers such topics as preventing injuries, recognizing and treating basic first aid emergencies, and relief of choking in infants and children.

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Medical providers who respond to cardiovascular emergencies in and out of the hospital enhance their treatment abilities through the American Heart Association's Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) training. In this classroom-based course, providers enhance their skills in treating adult victims of cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. From basic life support to advanced interventions and from airway management to pharmacology and more, professionals hone their skills to save lives, while earning their American Heart Association ACLS for Healthcare Providers Course Completion Card.

  • ECG and Pharmacology This is the only course of its kind that focuses on specific ECG recognition skills and drug treatment knowledge. Students may use this classroom-based course as a pre-course option to help achieve ACLS certification.

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) This classroom-based course uses a scenario-based, team approach to teach pediatric emergency management of patients approaching or already in respiratory or cardiac arrest.

  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) PHTLS was developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. It offers a unique approach to trauma care, promoting critical thinking and addressing the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs.

    The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an education course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course material, do not represent income to the Association.
