Rochester, New York, USA
GVA has opportunities for volunteer ambulance crew members which includes drivers, EMTs and paramedics (ALS Techs). For more details, see our "Ambulance Crews" page. Of course, we want to hear from people who are already trained, but training will be provided for interested people with no previous medical experience.
For opportunities to assist with other duties consider joining the GVA Auxiliary.
The entry-level EMT class is offered by Monroe Community College at the Public Safety Training Center and at various locations around the county, with classes starting throughout the year. Students assocated with GVA who successfully complete the class pay no tuition. Tuition for courses beyond the EMT level is refunded after the course is successfully completed.
When new members become certified EMTs, they train with practicing EMTs until three trainers (and the new medic) agree that they are ready to respond on ther own.
The minimum required duty time for active volunteers is 16 hours per month for drivers & EMTs and 24 hours per month for ALS techs. Duty hours can be flexibly scheduled and worked any hours, day or night.
GVA provides uniforms and equipment, ongoing education and field experience.
Volunteer members of GVA also perform administration tasks and can be elected to serve on the Board of Directors.
All GVA members in good standing are invited to social functions and other benefits. Currently there are about 60 volunteers.
Members are eligible to become Life Members after 10,000 hours or 15 years of service. Life Members participate in social functions and may continue active duties if they wish.
If you wish to apply for membership, or for questions, phone (953-0861) or e-mail the membership coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org.
